Today is officially National Mutt Day and we're super excited to start celebrating!
Why celebrate a mixed breed dog when those highfalutin dog shows only shower accolades on perfect purebreds? First, kudos to animal advocate, Colleen Paige, who started National Mutt Day in 2005 to draw attention to the thousands of mixed breed dogs awaiting their forever homes in shelters across the country.
Although Parental Unit has loved many a purebred dog—Benjie, Oliver and Carson—if you want to name names, she will probably never have another purebred dog unless it's a rescue. She's learned so much over the last nearly six years that we've been blogging, and the facts can't be ignored: Shelters are overflowing with beautiful dogs, 75% of whom are mixed breeds, and several million of these beautiful dogs are killed each year, simply for lack of a home.
Good thing Parental Unit took me home!
Now, back to what each of us can do to help call attention to this special day and in turn, encourage dog lovers to adopt one of these adorable doggie blends. Here's one suggestion: Have some fun and a picture of your mixed breed or a friend's blended pooch on the National Mutt Day Facebook Page with the hashtag #NationalMuttDay—you could win a prize and be featured on their page! You could also pay a visit to your local shelter and spend a few minutes sharing some love with their adoptable dogs, or maybe just share a picture of an adoptable pooch via social media. Whatever small thing you do to help dogs in need will have a wonderful ripple effect, we're sure.
Let us know what you're doing tomorrow to celebrate—we'd love to hear all about it! And don't forget to attach a picture of your beloved mixed breed—show the world how beautiful your "blend" is!
