Can Specially Trained Dogs Protect Children And Schools?

It seems that dogs have been trained to perform tasks that help humans everyday and in a myriad of ways: trained police and special forces canines, military dogs, guide dogs, seizure detection dogs, therapy dogs...you name it, and we dogs help humans. Since the most recent school tragedies, however, a new breed of trained canine has emerged—the school guard dog, we'll call him or her.

This article by one of our favorite holistic veterinarians, Dr. Karen Becker, explores this trend and discusses this latest way that "humans' best friend" is helping us. Now, in the wake of so many school tragedies, dogs are being trained to protect both students and schools from attack. For example, a Dutch Shepherd named Atticus has been trained to find guns and drugs and attack intruders, while remaining socialized to people, particularly youngsters. And non-profit organizations have sprung up to train these dogs, and award the dog free of charge to a deserving school, much like dog training facilities for guide or therapy dogs currently do.

So what do you think? Are specially trained dogs a good idea to have in schools to help thwart attacks? Would you want such a canine or canines alongside security personnel in your child's school? Let us know!

We think it is a good idea. Anything that helps keep children safe has to be good. Have a marvellous Monday.
Best wishes Molly

Hopefully the dogs are fully vested like military dogs are supposed to be working towards. In the school emergencies we've been seeing these dogs will be targets and they deserve the full protection available to keep them safe.
