"Dog's Best Friend": A New Take On Portraits Of People And Their Dogs

Photo by Dan Balilty, courtesy of The New York Times

The New York Times blog, "Lens" posted this fascinating article about one photographer's perspective on pet ownership, as seen through the lens of his camera. Dan Balilty felt that his work as an Israeli photojournalist made him "... the messenger of bad news," but that his new project, a series of portraits of people in their apartments with their pets, titled, 'The Dog's Best Friend', "...marks a professional shift toward what he called positive messages."

Notably, most of the dogs in this series of photographs were rescued from shelters, and Balilty has a rescued dog himself. What he discovered while shooting this series is that "owning dogs can bring out the best in people. Even when they are not with their pets, he believes that dog owners act differently than others. Taking care of dogs...is something that teaches people to just be better people."
Enjoy the slide show of some of these portraits that accompanies the article.

There's something special and thought-provoking about what those portraits capture...that we can't quite put into words... But that's why PU so loves the art of photography .
