Fabulous photo of me by John Clark of Clark Creative
This article by one of our favorite holistic veterinarians, Dr. Karen Becker, discusses lots of important information about your aging dog, and how to be proactive (rather than reactive after disease strikes), by knowing what to discuss with your veterinarian and when to discuss it.. As we know, many veterinarians, like human doctors, spend most of their practice treating illness, and much less time on preventing it (routine vaccinations are the exception). But veterinarians who practice holistic and integrative medicine attempt to arrange their practice differently: to develop a wellness plan specific to each patient, which includes, among other things, proper nutrition and exercise, an individual vaccination protocol, and very regular wellness exams.
If you currently have an older dog, or even a pooch a bit on the younger side of middle age, like me, we think this information will help you plan for your dog's health and happiness, well into old age.
And speaking of Dr. Becker, she is a real favorite of Ted Kerasote, the author of the book we're currently reading titled, Pukka's Promise: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs. We'll be posting a review along with a giveaway of this amazing book in the next few days, but until then, we'll just say that the author interviews Dr. Becker in this book and seems to agree with her philosophies. But when we describe this book as "amazing", that's really an understatement from our perspective-it's one of those rare pieces of writing that forced us to leave our comfort zone (yikes!) and think differently about our four-legged companions and our relationship with them...stay tuned!
