We wanted to call attention to what we think is a great program highlighted in this LA Times article, and initiated and funded by the Humane Society of the United States: The Pets for Life Program. This initiative brings free dog training classes and pet supplies to neighborhoods that "are animal services deserts...they have no vets, no low-cost spay-neuter, no grooming, no pet supplies..." Humane Society workers literally go door-to-door in these neighborhoods, handing out leashes and water bowls and inviting folks to their training sessions. One goal of this program is to educate both the community and individual dog owners so that such areas are less likely to become dog fighting havens. Another is to "extend the reach of animal services and information to under served areas, and to help animals by empowering the people who care for them."
We think this community outreach program is super-we're all about getting the information and services out there so people can make informed decisions about their pets! Learn more about the Pets for Life Program and how you can help!
