Actually, it is a wolf puppy! According to a story posted by Defenders of Wildlife (one of Parental Unit's favorite organizations), a well-meaning couple picked up a five-to six week old pup over Memorial Day weekend while camping in the Sawtooth National Forest near Ketchum, Idaho, and took him to a veterinarian as recommended by park staff. Although the U.S. Fish and Game Service searched for over two weeks for a wolf pack in the area, with the hope of reuniting the little fella with his kin, the wilderness made it nearly impossible to track any wolves, or to attempt to place the pup back in the wild.
The wolf pup had been recovering in the Boise zoo, and although he's gained weight, he still appears disoriented and skittish. Although state wildlife officials continue to search for options other than captivity, the pup likely will be placed with a wolf rescue facility.
Here's the recommendation from Defenders of Wildlife: "Wild animals, no matter how apparently helpless or irresistibly cute, are best left alone."

I thought it was a puppy when I first saw the picture. How cute!
serious cuteness. and you can't blame the couple for trying to do the right thing - you can't expect everyone to know this wasn't a domestic pup (especially since the park people didn't even figure it out). hopefully they can find a great rescue to help him out. :)
