While the debate continues over the best way to save the millions of dogs who are euthanized each year in shelters: promote adoption, promote spay/neuter (how about a hefty helping of both?), we've got a new trend brewing, borrowed from humans and their quest to find a mate and to find one quickly: speed dating!
Watch this clip from the Today Show to see some homeless pooches being prepped for their big night out. The affair includes mellow music, wine and cheese...and a whirlwind meet and greet. While it's probably fun for everyone involved (I'm guessing the dogs got some tasty treats and lots of attention), the "speed" part is no joke. As we all know, finding the right home for an orphaned animal, and finding it quickly, is often a matter of life and death.
As always, we appreciate your support and comments!

I saw that piece on the Today show. I thought it was a great idea. I would imagine that there is some kind of trial period but I don't know. I truly believe that any way to get people to take notice of the homeless dogs is wonderful. It is so sad all the ones that get put to sleep. At least that kind of event gives some of them a chance.
Awesome idea! How wonderful that folks are coming up with unusual and fresh ideas to find these babies a home.
Our local shelter is also doing a speed dating event. The person who was explaining it to me said that the speed dating is followed by a "second date" in order for potential adopters to spend more quality time with the dog they are interested in. That way adopters are exposed to a variety of dogs that may have been ignored otherwise, but adoptions aren't rushed and potentially regretted. It sounds like a great idea to me! Unless of course two people want the same dog... love triangle?
