Understanding Animal Hoarders

An article in the "Home" section of today's New York Times, titled "Leaving the Cluttered Nest" is a fascinating discussion of the ramifications of hoarding, particularly on the "adult children of hoarders", some of whom are actually writing memoirs to clear the air, so to speak. Now, we realize that we're not psychiatrists, but we're thinking that there may be some relationship between humans who hoard "things" and humans who hoard animals. In fact, one associate professor of psychiatry at John Hopkins University quoted in the article believes there "might be a genetic component" to hoarding. The idea, we think, is to understand the mindset or illness and attempt to prevent the destructive, often abusive behavior that results.

This article also illuminates another angle of the animal hoarding issue: one adult child of a hoarder recalled the following: "His mother's hoarding was so far gone that authorities deemed her home near New Orleans unfit for her pet dogs, after child services removed him when he was 13.

P.S.: Thanks for your comment about the Coffee with Canine. My mom does very boring writing for work that's why she likes to do such silly and crazy stuff on my blog.

Such a sad malady. I can't stand to watch those hoarding reality shows. It's just too sad, the way people fill the empty voids or sadness in their lives, with too much stuff and too many animals :(
