Disaster Preparededness Tips

Because Parental Unit and I don't live in a disaster-prone area, weather-wise, we've not taken the time to prepare for, well, anything. But the more we read about the natural disasters occurring around the country and world, we figured it wouldn't hurt to at least be a little prepared if mother nature, or other outside force decided to strike Columbus, Ohio with particular fury. Of course, since any disaster plan should include your pets, check out these detailed tips from the ASPCA: www.aspca.org/Pet-care/disaster-preparedness.aspx. While this clearly takes an upfront effort by you humans, you can betcha that we'll all appreciate that effort if disaster strikes.

When we read through this information, we were surprised at the level of detail that goes into preparing for an emergency. And it seems to us that our friends at the ASPCA have thought of just about everything humanly possible to help all species be ready to survive away from home if necessary. You have to understand that Parental Unit isn't a big planner for anything (well, maybe if it involves food) and she's also a bit of a pampered wimp, so wish us luck now if you hear of any disasters befalling Ohio...

We'll leave you on this rainy Sunday with a news story about the flood victims in the south, and ASPCA's successful effforts to help: www.aspca.org/News/National/National-News-Detail.aspx?NDate=20110513&NType=National#News1.

Bocci,

Since we do live in a disaster-prone area -- hurricanes from June through November -- we do appeciate all that is involved in planning for these eventualities. We once thought hurricanes were the most scary -- but after seeing the impact of tornadoes and now floods, we think hurricanes are less frightening after all because you can at least plan for them. Kind of.

During the season, I, Jake the Weatherdog, am always on the alert though -- Mom went through Hurricane Andrew in 1992, way before JH and I were born -- so she kind of knows what it's all about. And JH came to us as a result of being abandoned after Hurricane Katrina gave Forida a few licks before devastating the Gulf Coast.

The lessons -- be prepared and listen!!!

Wirey woofs,

Jake

We live in a country which is so lucky that it's a'natural disasters' free zone, therefore, the people take many things in our life for granted. However, I still believe that prevention is better than cure.
The link you share is definitely useful. Thanks!

It really is important to be prepared for disasters. There is so much to do to get all the animals out and somewhere to take them and room for them to be able to go with you. I have had to run from 3 hurricanes with 30 horses, 2 dogs, about six cats and some goats. I am sure most people don't have than many, but you need to have places to go where the animals can stay with you. Great post.
