We ran across this article about understanding and preventing what is commonly known as "Pet Alzheimer's" in the most recent Weekend Edition of USA Today. It begins with a statement that is dear to our hearts: " If everyone in America had a dog and walked it daily, our brains would benefit-and so would our dogs...regular, moderate exercise turns out to be healthy for our heads as well as our hearts. And the same goes for our dogs."
In pets, the disease is actually called "Cognitive Dysfunction", and the article lists several symptoms that pet owners can use to identify pending problems, like disorientation and confusion, and changes in the way a pet interacts-a normally outgoing pooch, for example, becoming withdrawn.
And it seems that cognitive decline in dogs is similar to that seen in people, so once again, we're learning from each other. But recent studies show that a combination of physical and mental exercise for both humans and their pets (cats too!) can head off and even prevent the onset of Alzheimer's.

So get the leash and pull out those puzzle toys daily-that's our prescription!

Thanks for sharing the article! Lilac has this and while we make the best of it, it's still hard to watch. It definitely motivates us to get out there and do more walking!

I think it will help me keep my mom from having her own issues!

What a great article ... for both the furry and the skinned ones. We fully support the idea of regular physical activity ... and those mental stimulation toys are cool. We got some of those from our Kyjen big win ... and our rescuer angel is going to put them to good use with the wirey ones that cross her threshold. We've already promised them to her. Us? We'll follow Teka's example and try to help Moma to do crossword puzzles! (As if!)

Well, if it keeps the Alzheimer's away, we're for it. Actually we think all our humans are in more immediate danger of it than we are. We seem fine where they seem more forgetful every day. We'll have to keep them walking.
We all love walkies and it's so good to hear that walkies help both humans and the dogs! We used to walk Laura everyday, she loved it and even though she was old and slow, she never gave up her walkies and always showed her enthusiasm when it was the time to have the walks.
Hi Y'all,
Thanks for an informative article! I thought I was only keepin' the Humans from Alzheimers! Guess I better ask them to get me some puzzle toys for Christmas.
