Today's Walk Included...A Lunging Dog And Breaking Glass! Yikes!

When Parental Unit and I set out for our walk this afternoon, we had no idea that we'd be running down an alley to avoid attack! First of all, it's pretty darn hot here-mid-nineties and super humid (although not quite as hot as it is in our friend Tank's neck of the woods), so neither of us was planning on running anywhere.

Well, that changed in a second: We were strolling by a house and heard loud barking and crazed "thuds" against glass. We loooked up to see a really big dog throwing himself at the home's wide, glass front window. At the moment that we were directly in front of the house on the sidewalk, the glass shattered! We both thought that huge dog was going to lunge right through that hole and come after us, so...we took off running acrosss the street and through 2 back alleys, attempting to avoid the dog's wrath. (Yep, we're both chickens!)

But when Parental Unit  glanced back over her shoulder (about 100 times) to see if the dog was running after us, it appeared to have fallen back inside, instead of through the now shattered window onto the porch. We still heard the barking as we tore down the alley, but thank goodness, no snarling dog!

Can you all guess what's coming here? Yep, another "lecture" from Parental Unit! If you choose to own a large "powerful breed dog", like, oh,  one large and powerful enough to shatter your home's front window, please train that dog not to lunge at the glass, or at anything for that matter. One would guess that the owners knew their dog had this problem.

And not to repeat myself, but I will :-):  dog owners are responsible for the actions of their dog, and have an obligation to make sure that dog doesn't interfere with or cause harm to other people, their dogs or property. We are both sick at the thought of what might have happened if this huge and apparently aggressive dog decided to jump through that broken window. And that poor, untrained dog probably got hurt by the broken glass. So, if you own a dog, please take the time to learn how to properly train, and then train, your beloved pooch. Please, we are too old (speak for yourself, Parental Unit) to run through any more back alleys...

Well, I've had enough action for today-I'm sackin' out...

That must have so scary for you Bocci, but I can't help but feel really bad for that dog inside the house. There are so many idiot dog owners who NEVER take their dogs out for exercise. In many cases of bad dog behavior, it probably stems from lack of exercise. If that big dog was cooped up for hours and hours every day, he might have just gone a little crazy. I'm glad nothing bad happened to you or PU, but I hope that big dog didn't get hurt and suffer with no one home.

Yep, you're exactly right Tank. Actually we're going over there tonight to make sure everything's O.K. Er...I should say Parental Unit is going over-not me!

Oh boy, how much time does I haves here? Well, I makes it brief. You sooooo need to come to my 'hood, you'll get da experience of a lifetime.
Okays, now where was I? I am mortified dat you and PU had to experience dat cuz frankly I would haves been scrared outta my mind (don't tell nobuddies dat though)I gots to agrre withs Tank on dis. Da lack of excercise and socilaization prolly made dat doggie go crazy....however, we has a Rottie dat walks in out hood and he is taken on walks many times a day BUT, he is AGGRESSIVE as all get out...therefore, limiting our walks to either NEVER or we are taken some place else to walk. Okay, I have no idea where I am going with this...I am venting I guess.
I sure hope he's okay though, he had to have some purty bad injuries BUT luckily you still heres.

Heavens! Just as well you both escaped unharmed. Did you call the Animal Welfare? Or the council?

Holy crap is right -- how frightening and how sad at the same time that the dog was so over stressed that he even shattered the glass in trying to get out. There are times when Just Harry sees one of the yappy dogs across the street and would seriously like to break through the sliding glass door to get out -- but he's 25 pounds .. and not really aggressive, just excited.

How kind of the Parental Unit to go check things out!!

Wirey woofs,

Jake and Just Harry

My asst. was telling the old guy about this and they wondered if animal control should have been called... it reminded them that they should get that phone # on their cell phones. About a year ago, I was attacked by some big dogs when the old guy was walking me at a school. Scared the heck out of us both. One of the dogs took a chunk out of my ear:(

What a scary, scary thing to have happen. I'm so glad that you two are okay. I hope that poor dog who ran through the glass is okay, too. Hopefully, he/she will learn from this or at least get some training so it doesn't happen again.

We live next door to the Village Idiots. We didn't start the nickname, but everyone in our little town knows who they are. Before they lived next door to us, they lived down the street and they had a golden retriever who went insane living with them. When Mom would walk past with Treat and Hawk, she thought the dog was going to come out the window every time. Well, one day, the woman brought the dog out on the front porch as they were walking by across the street and the dog broke her collar and came flying at them. Mom stood between Treat and Hawk and the dog and even grabbed her collar. The woman came over and was all apologetic. She said that since Mom's dogs are always so nice, she thought seeing them would make her dog behave. It was one of the few times Mom was totally at a loss for words. They got rid of that dog. After they moved in next door they got two more dogs, and they are crazy, too. One disappeared and the woman got a new boyfriend who brought over another dog and now they have a Siberian puppy who's never on a leash. We can't wait to get Dad's bonus check in November and put up a fence! Crazy dogs and people are everywhere!

Thanks to everyone for their kind comments, stories, and suggestions.
Parental Unit reports that when she drove by the house this evening, the porch light was on and all was quite. She got out of her car and snooped around, but was too afraid to go up on the porch. She couldn't tell if the window was covered or not because of glaring street light, but it looked like it. The neighborhood is a tad iffy. Since doggie did not go through the glass, but apparently fell backward, she's guessing his/her injuries were not too severe.. Keep paws crossed-clearly not the dogs fault....

Oy. That's about all I can say. Hopefully the doggie is okay. The humans, however, should probably be thrown through plate glass windows of their own. *sheesh*

Keep us posted.

Thank heavens for those back alleys for you and the parental unit! ;-)

That is so scary! I'm glad that you are okay, Bocci!

I feel terrible for the dog that went through the window as well... I really hope he is okay, and that his person reconizes that it is his/her fault, not the dog's. :/

Bocci, we are so glad that nothing happened to hurt you and your assistant. That poor dog that went through the window, hope he wasn't hurt. Why do people get dogs or cats and then don't bother to give them any attention or training. But at least you two escaped.
Have a great day.

Ha! Escaped is right...and it was scary! :-)
Parental Unit is going to drvie by there again today, just to see what's what...

I held my breath while reading your post today, phew, thanks goodness you're unharm.
What an unpleasant experience for both of you.
I pray that the dog was not badly injured and hopefully the owner learned some lessons.
Cheers!

Ooh boy! That was scary! We've had an incident like that where two obviously aggressive dogs (lived behind a fence, not walking, and very little human contact..and would attack each other when over excited) got out of said fence, and came after me and mine! They actuall did get me, before we scared them back into their house. We were OVER JOYED when the owners moved!!!!

Bocci said...

I bet you were overjoyed when they moved, Erin and Co.!
I think we'll avoid that area of town from now on... :-)
