The day is marked to "raise awareness about the extreme overpopulation affecting animal shelters" around the globe. Let's see what we, as pet owners who love are furrfriends dearly and treat them well (adopted or not!) can do on that day and throughout the rest of the year, to help homeless animals who are not yet so fortunate.
As an adopted dog myself, I take this issue particularly seriously. You know, I was dumped on the side of the road in front of our county's shelter by my previous owner, and while that pound is a good one, it is not a "no kill" shelter. So if it weren't for the luck of the draw, I might not be here typing this note to you today.
( Well, I am really cute and have an adorable, loving personality, so I probably would have been adopted, but that's beside the point :-) )
So together, let's think about what we can do this coming Saturday to help out our local shelters and rescue groups. Please send us your ideas and we'll have a special prize for one lucky winner.
(Parental Unit and I will pick one idea that we think is especially cool)!
Thanks!
P.S. Here's a reminder of how good I have it now... hey, it's Sunday, can't a guy lounge in bed for awhile?

That's a really nice idea Bocci. The problem seems so overwhelming... like whatever you or I do seems almost inconsequential because the need is so great at all the shelters (and apparently getting worse all the time.) My asst. has volunteered a bit at a local shelter and has a stack of blankets made that she's going to donate when the weather gets cold. Seems like each shelter has their own wish list of items they desperately need. Maybe we could each pledge to provide 1 of these items next Sat. to a local shelter. If enough people step forward to help, we could really make a difference.
P.S. Do you mind if I mention this on my blog?
What a cool idea! I might try to mention it on my blog, too. As far as ideas go, I'll have to put my thinking cap on!
Bunny
Hey, what Tank said, can I mention this on my blog as well?
Btw, I've given you an award, if you're so inclined: http://houseofcarnivores.blogspot.com/.
cool idea...OK to mention this on our blog? We are both 'dopted, but in different ways.
We thought for a while this summer we were homeless, those hotels got BORING, but muzzer and dad made it come out OK. I guess. Anyway, we know how lucky we are and would love to come up with a good idea to put on your list. We's ruminatin'

Puddles
Sorry, I realized I added an "e" on your name. Dat was pure accident, I can't type to good.

Bocci, thanks for reminding us about Homeless day. We sure will write a post about it. We are big into trying to reduce the population by spaying and neutering so as to reduce the number of homeless dogs and cats.
This is a great idea! I will definitely post about it, and what you decide to do!
Wow....thanks for da reminder Bocci!
I will be thinkings on this tonight...and hope to have an idea to share tomorrow...
ANYTHING we can do to raise awareness or help out da homeless dogs and cats is a very good thing...
MinnaK
Hmm. We will put our thinking caps on about how to raise awareness about the homeless. I know Mom wears all sorts of t-shirts about rescuing doggies and kitties (even though neither Abby nor I is a rescue doggie, Mom knows the importance, and provides green papers to our local shelter), but I think you are talking about something more than Mom just wearing a rescue t-shirt... We'll think and let you know!

Bocci!
I did not know about this special day but sure I will tell my mom about it and I hope we can come with a good idea, ok?
Take care

A good cause - and great of you to mention it...
You're so sweet, Bocci.
Mika was also a rescue from the SPCA.
Maybe you can donate something like food, or clothes?
We're thinking as hard as we can over here, Bocci. I'm a rescue and my adopted brother is a rescue from our munipal shelter (kill shelter) so we are in tune with this issue. We'll sure try to blog about it, but other than the usual - donating what we can, etc. I haven't thought of a whole lot. Still working on it.
I did add you to my blogroll. Thanks for the reminder. I'm trying to keep it current, but I keep meeting this interesting doggies and kitties and it's hard to keep up.

Hi Bocci
We just popped over from Magie Mae as she said you were publicising something good about dogs. And you are.
We have found four abandoned dogs on Osmaston Park (Derby, UK) so far. It is terrible for a dog to be abandoned, tragic even!
Publicising rescue and adoption is a well worthy cause.
Wigles and Waggles
Hector and Bonny too!

Thanks Bocci and everyone on this post for pulling together and promoting the importance of spay/neuter/adopt.
International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) conceived National Homeless Animals' Day and Candlelight Vigils back in 1992 to shed light on pet overpopulation.
Over the years, worldwide efforts have grown in number so ISAR has now officially titled the Day as International Homeless Animals' Day.
If you would like to attend a vigil in your area, please visit ISAR's website to view the events listing page www.isaronline.org.
If you find there is not a vigil locally, please feel free to participate in ISAR's Online Vigil.
Thank you for all you do to help animals!

Hi Bocci! We found you via Pup Fan's blog. Thanks for the info on Homeless Animals Day! All of us dogs over at Dogs of the Week are dogs that were homeless and now are fosters of St. Louis Senior Dog Project. If we were to raise awareness and would be wanting to help out we would ask people to donate money or gift cards for online pet pharmacies. (Dr.Foster and Smith, AlliVet and American Vet Online have some) We don't want to seem to money oriented, but sometimes senior dogs require a lot of vetting in order to get them back on track, many of us have suffered years and years of neglect and have diseases that have gone untreated. Small rescues without a shelter and without an on-site vet feel the strain of vet bills and would appreciate the gift cards :) So just a thought, how about helping out an arthritic pooch or kitty with a gift certificate!
We will mention you on our blog too woof woof!
I like that idea, I know I'm in the UK but we have a dogs home not far from us. On Saturday I will make a point of giving a donation of some food and toys,
See Yea George xxx
Thanks George! That's just what we're thinking of-a small donation of some kind to your local shelter. It is an "international day" after all!
Thanks so much!
Your buddy,
Bocci
Hello, Thank You for raising awareness on International Homeless Animal Day! I find it amazing on how many animals don't have homes. It breaks my heart to go into my local shelter every week and to see the same dogs waiting for their furever homes. Especially when more and more puppies are being born every day. More people need to spay and Neuter their pets.
HOOO boy we are ONCE again behind but caught up now.. ( we were drooling over the plate of pasta in one of your past posts... we got a little stuck at it..) Listen we like the idea of donating some toys and stuff... We know we have really wonderful lives and we get really sad when we think of all our friends who do not. So we are going to do the same thing and donate this weekend...Archie said if he had it his way he would get a HUGE house and bring everyone over but he just doesn't know where.. Love A+A
Hi Bocci
Nice to meet you, Tank sent us over. First of all can we say how sad we were to think anyone could have dumped you!
Thank dogness you have your great home now.
We recently took part in a Paw it Forward. We then had the idea that instead of sending gifts we would give bloggers the alternative to donate to a rescue of their choice.
So what happened was that the money we would have spent on pressies and, lets face it, Postage! - went to a charity of their choice.
In one case this was for vet treatment for a doggie in the Last Resort Rescue and in another it was to sponsor a walk for homeless doggies.
We haven't read all you other suggestions but it is an idea.
Most of us are happy to give up a new toy/treats to help other dogs.
love
Martha and Bailey xxx
Thanks Martha and Bailey-very good idea! let's keep in touch!
Your buddy,
Bocci
Hi Bocci - what a great post! I too am a rescue dog - in fact your story sounds pretty similar to mine. I was abandoned with another dog 10 years ago. Fortunately, I ended up at a no-kill shelter and soon a wonderful home. I have heard a statistic that only one in twelve dogs makes it out of shelters (same for cats). It is just awful. I will include something on my blog on Saturday.
I am your newest follower. Hope we can be friends!
Your pal, Pip
Thanks for stoppin" by Pip! We love having new furrfriends-you're already on my blogroll!
We're so glad you liked the post-every little bit we can do will help :-)
Your buddy,
Bocci
